Vault Hunters Modpack: Overview, Content & How to Install
Updated July 28, 2026
Vault Hunters is a roguelike modpack for Minecraft 1.18.2 on Forge, created by YouTuber iskall85 and his team around a custom mod, The Vault. The loop: build your survival base, then dive into Vaults — procedurally generated, time-limited dungeons where you loot chests, fight mobs and escape (or not) with the spoils. Every run earns experience to invest in talents, abilities and research. It is aimed at players who love the “one more run” pull of roguelikes and long-term character progression.
As of July 2026, the third edition (VH3) is still the reference, still on Forge 1.18.2 — no 1.21 version exists. This year’s news is Vault Hunters Third Edition - Remastered: an official re-release that bakes in VH3’s final update (Update 21), trims the mod list (about 157 mods) and modernizes world generation. It is the recommended pack for starting a fresh world.

The concept: the Vault loop
A Vault Hunters playthrough alternates between two rhythms. On the surface, it is classic Minecraft survival: base, farms, resources — and crafting the crystals that open the portals. Inside a Vault, everything changes: a procedurally generated labyrinth, a ticking timer, rooms full of chests, mobs and objectives to complete before finding the exit. Dying in a Vault is costly, so every run carries real tension.
The loot feeds a deep character progression: levels, a talent tree, active abilities, and an original research system — most of the pack’s mods (storage, automation, quality of life) start locked and are unlocked by spending research points. Every player shapes their own game: one unlocks tech, another goes all-in on combat talents.
VH3 or Remastered: where Vault Hunters stands in 2026
Two official packs coexist on CurseForge. Vault Hunters Third Edition is the original pack, updated through April 2026, and the one existing worlds run on. Vault Hunters Third Edition - Remastered, released in spring 2026 and updated on July 24, 2026, is the final re-release: it ships Update 21 (VH3’s last content update), removes redundant mods (about 157 remain) and reworks world generation. Note: Remastered is meant for fresh starts, not for migrating an existing world.
As for a Minecraft 1.21 edition: nothing exists or is available as of July 2026. 1.18.2 remains Vault Hunters’ home, and the pack is complete and stable there.
How to install Vault Hunters, step by step
Both editions are distributed on CurseForge; the official app handles Forge and the mods automatically.
- 1
Install the CurseForge app
Download the CurseForge app from curseforge.com and link it to Minecraft Java.
- 2
Pick your edition
For a fresh world, search for “Vault Hunters Third Edition - Remastered”. To join a server or continue a world, install the exact edition it uses.
- 3
Install
Click Install: the app fetches Forge 1.18.2 and the full mod list automatically.
- 4
Allocate RAM
Allocate 6 to 8 GB in the profile settings: Vaults generate large structures on the fly and appreciate the headroom.
- 5
Launch and prepare your first crystal
Create a world, set up a simple base and follow the quest book to your first Vault crystal. Only bring what you can afford to lose.
Recommended setup
Vault Hunters asks more of your machine than the average 1.18.2 pack: every Vault is a dimension generated on demand, which hits CPU and memory in bursts. 6 GB of allocated RAM is a realistic minimum; 8 GB smooths Vault entries. An SSD noticeably shortens generation times. If you stutter inside Vaults, lower render distance: the labyrinths are enclosed, 8 chunks is plenty.
Playing Vault Hunters in multiplayer
The pack was born from a creator SMP and multiplayer suits it beautifully: Vaults can be run co-op (loot and objectives are shared), research can be pooled depending on server settings, and a trading economy between specialized players emerges fast. Check before joining: the exact edition and pack version, the Vault death policy (full loss, insurance, casual mode) and whether research is shared or individual.

Frequently Asked Questions
› Is there a Vault Hunters 1.21 version?
No. As of July 2026 no 1.21 edition exists: Vault Hunters lives on Forge 1.18.2. The 2026 news is the Remastered edition, which stays on that base.
› Which edition should I install: VH3 or Remastered?
For a fresh solo world or one with friends, Remastered: trimmed mod list, Update 21 included, reworked worldgen. To join a server or continue an existing world, stick to that world’s exact edition and version.
› What happens when you die inside a Vault?
By default you lose what you were carrying — that is the pack’s roguelike contract. Config options (and many servers) soften the rule with more forgiving modes. Golden rule: never bring your precious items into a Vault.
› Why are most mods locked at the start?
That is the research system, the heart of the pack: storage, automation and quality-of-life mods unlock with points earned in Vaults. It turns familiar mods into progression rewards and makes every playthrough different.
› How long does a Vault Hunters playthrough last?
The loop is close to endless: reaching the high levels takes hundreds of hours. Most players run it in seasons, like the SMPs the pack came from.
› Can I play Vault Hunters from Minecraft Bedrock?
No. Like every Java modpack, Vault Hunters requires Minecraft Java Edition with the pack installed client-side. Bedrock crossplay is not possible.
