What is a modded Minecraft server?
A modded Minecraft server runs actual mods — on Forge, NeoForge or Fabric — that add content vanilla could never offer: industrial machines, magic systems, entire dimensions, Pokémon and more. Unlike a plugin server (where only the server is modified), you need to install the same mods as the server to connect. That’s the price of an experience transformed from the ground up.
The ecosystem is organized into modpacks: curated collections of dozens or hundreds of mods balanced together, from focused tech packs to generalist kitchen sinks like All The Mods. Every modded server runs one specific pack, on one specific version.
How to join and choose a modded server
To join: install the server’s exact modpack through a launcher (CurseForge, Modrinth, Prism… or the server’s own custom launcher — the easiest route, since everything comes preconfigured). Versions must match down to the individual mod, or the connection gets refused.
To choose: look at the client-side RAM requirement (4 GB is enough for a small pack, 8 GB and up for an ATM), server stability (uptime is shown on our server pages), the wipe policy, and the size of the community. A well-known pack means tutorials everywhere; a custom pack means an experience you won’t find anywhere else.

› What’s the difference between a mod and a plugin?
A plugin only modifies the server: you connect with vanilla Minecraft (survival, minigames…). A mod also modifies your game: you have to install it locally, but in exchange it can add blocks, machines and entire worlds.
› What’s the easiest way to install a modpack?
The CurseForge or Modrinth launcher: search for the pack, click install, play. Many servers also offer their own launcher that installs everything, server config included. Expect a few minutes and a few gigabytes of downloads.
› My game lags on a modpack — what can I do?
Allocate more RAM in your launcher (6 to 8 GB for a big pack), turn off shaders, and add a performance mod if one isn’t already included. If the pack wants more than your PC can give, aim for a lighter pack.
› Does playing modded cost anything?
No: mods and modpacks are free. All you need is an official Minecraft Java account. Some servers sell ranks or cosmetics, but access to modded gameplay itself costs nothing.
› Do modded servers support Bedrock Edition (console, mobile)?
No — mods are exclusive to Minecraft Java Edition. Bedrock crossplay only works on plugin servers.
