RLCraft Modpack: Overview, Content & How to Install

Updated July 28, 2026

RLCraft is Minecraft’s best-known hardcore survival modpack: created by Shivaxi on Forge 1.12.2, it stacks around 185 mods to make survival realistic and brutal — thirst, temperature, broken limbs, dragons, and mobs that can kill you at level 1. It is aimed at players who want a difficulty curve that hits head-on, where every bit of progress is paid for and earned, solo or on servers where survival becomes a team sport.

As of July 2026, the stable version is still 2.9.3, distributed on CurseForge. Version 2.10 is in the works (test builds announced through the official Discord), and a Bedrock adaptation now exists on the Marketplace — but the reference experience remains the Java pack.

The concept: survival that forgives nothing

RLCraft starts from a simple idea: in vanilla Minecraft you almost never die; here you die all the time — at first. Thirst and temperature join hunger, your first tools are knapped from flint, a skill system gates equipment (you cannot even hold an iron sword without the required level), and injuries heal limb by limb.

Progression is a slow reconquest: first nights buried in a dirt hole, first weapon levels, first flying mount, first dragon kill. The difficulty never drops — you rise.

What stands out in game

  • The Ice and Fire dragons, able to flatten a base — and whose loot changes a playthrough
  • The oversized bestiary of Lycanites Mobs, with its summons and assemblable equipment
  • The thirst and temperature gauges that dictate your routes and gear
  • Localized injuries: a broken leg gets treated, not regenerated
  • Battle towers, deep dungeons and lethal structures on every horizon

How to install RLCraft, step by step

The pack is officially distributed on CurseForge. Installing is the easy part — what follows is not:

  1. 1

    Install the CurseForge launcher

Download the CurseForge app from curseforge.com.

  2. 2

    Search for « RLCraft »

In the modpack search, select RLCraft (by Shivaxi) and click Install. The offered version is 2.9.3.

  3. 3

Allocate the right amount of RAM

Set the allocation between 4 and 6 GB. Do not go higher: 1.12.2 handles memory excess poorly and can actually run worse.

  4. 4

    Add OptiFine (optional)

For better performance, add the 1.12.2 version of OptiFine to the profile’s mods — the community’s standard recommendation.

  5. 5

    Launch and learn to die

First reflex in game: break grass for plant fibers, knap flint on gravel, and do not hit anything that moves.

Playing RLCraft on a server

In multiplayer, the pack’s brutality becomes teamwork: shared respawn points, group dragon hunts, veterans gearing up newcomers. Servers differ in their adjustments — protected spawn, starter kits, hardcore seasons with leaderboards — and in their anti-grief policy: check base protection, since a dragon can attack while you are offline.

Install exactly the server’s version (2.9.3 for nearly all of them): it has to match mod for mod, or the connection is refused.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is RLCraft still on 1.12.2?

Its foundational mods — Lycanites Mobs, Ice and Fire in their original balance — are inseparable from that version. Shivaxi maintains the pack on that base, and the version takes nothing away from the experience.

When is RLCraft 2.10 coming?

Version 2.10 is in development, with test builds announced on Shivaxi’s official Discord. No firm date as of July 2026 — servers still run 2.9.3, which remains the version to install.

Is it playable for a beginner?

Yes, if you accept the deal: the first ten hours are a string of brutal deaths, then the game opens up as your skills rise. A server with a protected spawn and active players softens the learning curve considerably.

How much RAM for RLCraft?

Between 4 and 6 GB allocated in the launcher. Unlike modern packs, adding more does not help: 1.12.2 can even lose smoothness with excess memory.

Does RLCraft exist on Bedrock (console, mobile)?

An official adaptation reached the Bedrock Marketplace in 2025, but it is a recreation, not the real pack: full RLCraft, with its 185 mods and its servers, remains exclusive to Minecraft Java.
