An RLCraft server runs RLCraft (Forge 1.12.2, created by Shivaxi), the modpack that built its legend on one simple idea: make survival realistic and brutal. Thirst and temperature will kill you, your first tools require knapped flint, dragons level your base, and the humblest critter can finish you off at level 1. A skill system even forces you to level up before you’re allowed to swing an iron sword.
In multiplayer, that difficulty becomes a team sport: players share respawn points, hunt dragons in groups, and servers run events where dying is a collective spectacle. Dying together somehow hurts less.
Picking an RLCraft server (and surviving day one)
RLCraft servers distinguish themselves through their tweaks: some soften the curve slightly (protected respawns, starter kits), others embrace full hardcore, sometimes with seasons and a survivor leaderboard. Check base protection — a dragon attacking while you’re offline happens fast — and the anti-grief policy.
For day one: break grass for plant fibers, knap flint on gravel, don’t hit anything that moves, and drink purified water. Everything else you’ll learn by dying.
Frequently asked questions
› Is RLCraft really that hard?
Yes — that’s the whole point. The first 10 hours are a string of unfair deaths, then the game opens up as your skills level. The difficulty is brutal but learnable, and that’s precisely what makes every milestone feel earned.
› Why is the pack still on 1.12.2?
Its foundational mods (Lycanites Mobs, Ice and Fire…) are inseparable from that version. Shivaxi maintains and balances the pack on that base — the version takes nothing away from the experience.
› How much RAM does RLCraft need?
Allocate 4 to 6 GB in your launcher. Beyond that, 1.12.2 handles excess memory poorly: there’s no point giving it 12 GB — it can even hurt performance.
› Any tips for starting out on a server?
Join a server with a protected spawn and active players: veterans are usually happy to lend a hand (or a bed). Set a modest first goal — survive one night, then one week. And treat every death as a lesson, not an injustice… well, almost every death.
