A Pixelmon server is a multiplayer Minecraft server running Pixelmon (now Pixelmon Reforged, on Forge), a mod that turns Minecraft into a full Pokémon game: over 900 creatures with biome-based spawns, turn-based battles faithful to the original games, craftable Poké Balls, breeding, shinies and legendaries. All of it inside a Minecraft world where you build your Pokémon Center the way you’d build a base.
Servers are where Pixelmon becomes unique: gyms run by real players, organized leagues and tournaments, trading shops between trainers, legendary spawn events. No official Pokémon game offers this level of community life.
Finding the right Pixelmon server
Look at league activity first: gyms held by active players and a living championship are the heart of the experience. Then compare shiny and legendary spawn rates (every server tunes its own), the economy (currency, auction house, safe trading) and recurring events. On the technical side, the mod is currently maintained on 1.16.5, 1.20.2 and 1.21.1 — newer servers are migrating to 1.21.1, and the server’s own launcher remains the safest way to avoid version headaches.

› Is Pixelmon legal? Do I need to own a Pokémon game?
The mod is free and requires no Pokémon game — only Minecraft Java Edition. It isn’t affiliated with Nintendo; it’s a fan project, and it’s now distributed exclusively through its official channels (the Reforged website).
› Pixelmon or Cobblemon — which should I choose?
Pixelmon is the veteran: more Pokémon, a complete battle system, mature gyms and leagues. Cobblemon is newer, lighter and prettier, on modern versions, but with less competitive content. For the full online-Pokémon-league experience, Pixelmon is still the reference.
› How do I catch my first Pokémon?
Craft Poké Balls: three cooked apricorns (the mod’s colored fruits) for the lid, an iron ingot base and a stone button. Then weaken a wild Pokémon in battle and throw the Ball. Your starter is free at first login — choose wisely.
› Do legendaries actually spawn?
Yes: they spawn randomly near players based on biome and weather conditions, with a server-wide announcement. Each server tunes the frequency — it’s a real point of comparison between server listings.
