What is an expert modpack?

An expert modpack server runs a pack whose recipes have been deliberately reworked and interwoven across mods, turning the entire progression into one vast automation puzzle. Where a regular pack lets you ignore the mods you don’t enjoy, an expert pack makes them all matter: mod A’s machine demands components from mod B, which needs power from mod C.

The genre’s landmarks: Enigmatica 2 Expert (1.12.2), the definitive classic, whose endgame is crafting creative items; Enigmatica 6 Expert, its 1.16.5 successor; Nomifactory, the friendly expert pack built around GregTech with the friction sanded off; and at the summit, GregTech: New Horizons — the expert formula taken to its absolute extreme.

Choosing an expert server — and going the distance

An expert pack is measured in hundreds of hours, so the number one criterion is map longevity. Look for a server that commits to no wipes, runs regular backups and has been around long enough to be credible. Then check how quest teams work (shared or individual progression) and how alive the Discord is — on an expert pack, the community is your living documentation.

Finally, be honest about your level. If this is your first expert pack, Nomifactory and Enigmatica 2 Expert are proven entry points, with guides everywhere and curves that are demanding but fair. GregTech: New Horizons is a life project — you sign up for it with your eyes open.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an expert pack and a normal pack?

In a normal (“kitchen sink”) pack, every mod keeps its original recipes and plays independently. In an expert pack, recipes are rewritten to interlock the mods: you cannot progress without automating, planning and touching everything. Less freedom, far more depth.

Which expert modpack should I start with?

Nomifactory to learn GregTech logic with maximum comfort, or Enigmatica 2 Expert for the canonical expert experience, documented to death by a decade of players. Save GregTech: New Horizons for later — it is the final exam, not the introductory course.

How many hours does an expert pack take?

Plan on several hundred hours to see the end of Enigmatica 2 Expert or Nomifactory playing regularly, and thousands for GTNH. On a server, splitting roles across a team cuts that figure dramatically.

Can I play an expert pack solo on a server?

Yes, and plenty of players do — but teams are the natural way to play expert: each member owns a slice of the factory (power, resources, chemistry) and progression advances on every front at once. Expert communities are also the most generous with help you will find in modded Minecraft.

Why make the recipes harder on purpose?

Because the difficulty is the game: when a single machine requires an entire production chain, every tier you unlock is a genuine engineering victory. Expert players don’t endure the complexity — they show up for it.
