A tech server runs engineering mods like Mekanism, Thermal Expansion, Immersive Engineering and Applied Energistics 2: you build generators, ore-processing lines, cable networks and automated storage systems that turn survival into a game of industrial management. The loop is addictive — produce power, double then triple your ore yields, automate your crafting, and start over at a bigger scale.
Each mod has its own personality: Mekanism pushes ore processing all the way to five ingots per ore and tops out with fission and fusion reactors; Thermal Expansion offers clean, dependable machines that are perfect for learning; Immersive Engineering brings retro-industrial multiblocks and real high-voltage power lines; Applied Energistics 2 dissolves your storage into an ME network that can craft anything on demand. On a server, these industrial empires get traded, toured and compared.
How to pick a good tech server
Start by identifying the pack type: a kitchen sink like All The Mods carries all of these mods among hundreds of others, a dedicated tech pack tightens the experience, and expert packs (GregTech above all) stretch every production chain dramatically. Then check the chunk-loading rules — your machines only run while you are offline if the server allows it — the anti-lag policy (a poorly run tech server collapses under its own factories), and whether mining dimensions get regular resets, which regenerate resources without touching anyone’s base.
Frequently asked questions
› How is this different from a Create server?
Philosophy. Create is about visible mechanics: shafts, cogwheels, machines that physically move. Classic tech mods are about efficiency: compact machines with interfaces, cables, invisible power. The two schools coexist in plenty of packs — and complement each other well.
› Is a tech server the same as a technical Minecraft server?
No. Technical Minecraft means pushing the vanilla game to its limits — optimized farms, redstone, mechanics exploited down to the tick — with no mods at all. A tech server runs industrial mods. Two closely related passions, two different worlds.
› Which mod should I start with?
Thermal Expansion or Mekanism: their progression is crystal clear and every machine makes sense on its own. Move to Applied Energistics 2 the moment your chests overflow, and save Immersive Engineering for the joy of building installations that actually look like industry.
› Is power compatible across mods?
Almost always, yes: the Forge Energy standard (FE, successor to RF) is shared by Mekanism, Thermal, Immersive Engineering and most modern mods. One mod’s generator powers another mod’s machines with no converter in sight.
› What is the “x5” Mekanism players keep talking about?
The summit of its ore-processing chain: by stringing together the mod’s chemical machinery, one raw ore ends up producing five ingots instead of one. Building that chain tier by tier is every Mekanism player’s grand project — and an ideal team effort on a server.
